Chirer Pulao ( Poha Pulao ) – Flattened Rice

One of the most favorite snacks , Breakfast or Jol Khabar (Says in Bengali) in Bengali is the Chirer Polao. Also known as Poha Pulao, it is usually had as breakfast  and it is an easy to cook vegetarian dish. Flattened Rice is known as Poha (Hindi) or Chira (Bengali).

Ingredients :-
  • Chire (Poha or Flattened Rice) - 3 cups , Washed
  • Oil - 3 tbsp
  • Peanut - 1/2 or 3/4 cups
  • Mustard seed - 1 tbsp
  • Red Chilli (optional) - 2
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Curry Leaves - 8 to 10
  • Cilantro - 1/2 cup
  • Green Chilli - 2 Chopped
  • Lime (optional) - 1/2
  • Salt to Teste
  • Potato (optional) - 1 Cup
  • Chopped Onion - 1
  • Pea (optional) - 3/4 cup
How to make Chirer Poha ( Poha Polao) :-
  • Add oil into a moderately hot pan.
  • As the oil heats up, add the peanut.
  • Stir for several minutes till you see slight browning.
  • Remove the peanut from the oil and set it aside.
  • In the same hot oil, add the cubed potatoes.
  • Stir. Then cover the pot for a minute.
  • Remove the cover and stir.
  • Continue this for the next 4 to 5 minutes till the potatoes get brownish.
  • Remove it from oil and leave it aside.
  • To the hot pan add some extra oil if it is needed.
  • Add 2 dried red chilies.
  • Add 1 tea spoon of black mustard seed.
  • Stir the mixture as the mustard seeds pop.
  • Add the chopped onions.
  • Add the curry leaves.
  • Continue stirring for a minute or two.
  • Add the chopped green chilies.
  • Stir. As the onions turn slightly translucent.
  • Add turmeric powder.
  • Add salt.
  • Mix all together and turn off the heat.
  • Wash the chire (poha) with water.
  • Then drain it in a colander. If you use thick chire (poha), you can wash it earlier and leave it after draining.
  • Add the chire (poha) to the fried onion.
  • Stir.Add the fried peanuts.
  • Add the fried potatoes. Mix them well.
  • Then add the green peas. Continue stirring till the mixture becomes hot.
  • Squeeze the lemon or lime juice. And then garnish with chopped cilantro.
  • Turn off the heat.
  • This completes the chirer polao (Poha Polao)  preparation
  • It takes about 45 minutes to prepare and serves 2-3 people
  • Recipe is ready to serve .. Serve it hot ....
