Kalo Jeere Diye Patla Macher Jhol – Black Cumin Instant Fish Curry

One of Easiest Fish curry , fish curry using black cumin seeds or kala Jeera or black Onion seeds . This is one of the traditional fish curry from Bengali cuisine. Whenever we have no time and have to cook fish , cooking fish curry with this style and serving with hot white rice in lunch or dinner is very easy and quick . Cooking it mostly in summer . It is Bangladeshi Style fish curry .

Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: 4-6 Ingredients:
  1. 1 kg of Rohu or katla (cut into pieces and washed, or you can find the pieces in market)
To marinate the fish:
  1. Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  2. Red chili powder – 3/4 tsp
  3. Mustard Oil - 1 tbsp
For the curry:
  1. Black cumin (kalonji/Kalo Jeera/Kalonji/Nigella Seeds) - 1 tbsp
  2. Tomato – 4 medium size
  3. Green chili – 4 pic
  4. Mustard Oil – 5 tbsp
  5. Salt to test
  6. Coriander Leaf – 1 cup chopped

  1. Marinate the fish
  2. Put the pieces of fish into a bowl and add the turmeric, Mustard oil and salt to help the spices and gently massage the spices to the fish. Cover and keep aside to marinate for 15 minutes.
  3. To fry the fish, heat a medium fry pan till hot and add the 5 tbsp musters oil. Heat well till the oil reaches its Maximum hotness  .
  4. Once hot, add the marinated fish pieces and fry them for a couple of minutes on each side till they are golden brown.
  5. Once the fish is golden brown, place them in to a plate and keep aside.
  6.  Heat the same pan once again  the oil is hot, add black cumin (kalonji).
  7. When they begin to crackle, add the tomato and green chilli  Saute.
  8. Now add water as per your requirement for gravy. Sprinkle salt and let the gravy bubble up.
  9. Now add the fish pieces. Cook covered on medium heat for 2 minutes.
  10. Spread the coriander leaves on top and mix in.
  11. Serve hot with rice.
  12. Serve this Bengali hot and Spicy fish curry with Hot Plain white Rice
